Partner Description

The MBI-department at TUG is one of the five departments in the division of economic and management sciences of the faculty of mechanical engineering and economics at the Graz University of Technology. In education and science the department covers the areas of applied and business informatics, systems engineering, modeling and simulation as well as quantitative methods and optimization (OR). Beside the good relations to its partners from industry the network of the MBI spans from governmental institutions, organizations dealing with rescue operations and disaster relief to international recognized research organizations in the area of PPDR like the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey (CA) or the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) at the University of California in Berkley. The department is a member of the research committee of PSCE - Public Safety Communication Forum Europe and its chairman holds a position of an academic advision in the research advisory board of the Austrian Ministry of Interior.

Competence

The MBI-department at TUG has been involved in several research and implemantation projects (national and internatioal) in the area of PPDR. They covered for exemple applications for search and rescue and large scale emergency (SARONTAR, GEO-PICTURES) as well as systems atchitecture and policy development for ICT-services (ISKOS, GOAL). Furthermore the department and his members have taken part ing numerous large scale emergency simulations and field test as academic evalutors and advisors:

  • Koralmschutz 08 (governmental training in emergency management)
  • Tempest 09 (federal emergency simulation of the Austrian Red Cross Society)
  • Geopictures 2012 (field test within the geopictures project)
  • Forest Fire Soboth 2012 (emergency simulation within the GOAL project with more than 650 fire fighters)

In the recent past the department focus on research and implementation projects in the field of information systems and services. Especially the integration of "mission critical" ICT infrastructure and the adjacent services in public protection and disaster relief (PPDR) are the main tasks of the MBI in syndicate projects. Furthermore, the department has several years of experience in the setup and management of interdisciplinary research collaboratories. One example is the since 2004 existing research platform for fight simulation with dozens of research projects and more than 20 partners from industry and research.
